President Kay Bernard leads the club this year. Once in a while clubs provide a detailed history of their club. President Kay provided such a history. This is an excerpt of that history.
“History of the Grand Rapids East Rotary Club
ln 1971 Reuben L Young was District Governor of District 6290. It was his fervent wish
to increase the number of clubs in the District. He set his sights on Grand Rapids South Rotary,
urging them to explore the formation of a club in the Southeast.
On Friday, June 4, 1971, our Charter Presentation Night was held in the Hotel Ballroom of the Pantlind Hotel. President Ace Oren received our Charter from a beaming District Governor Young. A telegram was read from Rotary International from the International Convention the being held in Australia, confirming us as Rotary's newest club.”
We had a great meeting with the club, they are doing great things including sponsoring the Interact club at Forest Hills Northern High school.
Allendale
We enjoyed meeting with the Allendale club at Peppino's Restaurant. Chartered in 2008 by founding and current member Carlo DeLeonardo, The vision of the club is to enrich the community through compassionate service and the building of lasting relationships. The mission is to engage our local community and beyond through service, support and fellowship.
Kim Blum and Rochell Prahl are sharing the role of president this year. Some of the clubs projects include ; scholarships for seniors, Rotary Holiday Lights Reverse parade (drive through parade developed during Covid), Allendale Rotary 4th of July parade, and Kind Words Project at Back to School Fair (making friendship bracelets).
They support the Interact club at Allendale High School and participate in Interact Trunk or Treat event.
Roscommon
We had a great time at the Roscommon club meeting. It’s a lively bunch led by president Nancy Williams. Some of their activities include; a duck race in the Au Sable River every July, a Spring Auction in May and a Buck Pole at Fred's Restaurant in Roscommon in November. The club also created a paved path around Higgins Lake.
The sponsors an Interact club at Roscommon High School with 60 members.
They hope to host a mental health symposium this year with support of the Houghton Lake and Grayling clubs.
