August and summer has finally come to our area. Traveling around our District, I am thankful that the beautiful scenery is reflected in the family of Rotarians I meet every week. I’ve always tried to avoid negative people and Drama Queens in my life. Everyone has times of trouble and need our support occasionally. However, some individuals don’t seem to know how to get out of their own way in having a good life. Rotarians aren’t like that. Their energy and optimism lifts us up. I know we all feel the daily blessings of God and feel fortunate in the lives we live and the friends who surround us. I know because when we lose one there is such a large personal hole. We are truly the Family of Rotary.

Why Bill Gates Partners With Rotary To Eradicate Polio. Read this interesting artikel in the digital Forbes magazine by Devin Thorpe who interviewed Rotary President Barry Rassin and Bill Gates and about Polio.

"... The Gates Foundation has nearly 40 times the assets of the Rotary Foundation’s $1.25 billion. While Rotary engages in a variety of global public health initiatives it does not have the expertise of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization or UNICEF—the three organizations that round out the five key members of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative.

Rotary led the formation of the GPEI, as it is commonly known within polio circles, in the mid-1980s, formally launching in 1988. The Gates Foundation joined the effort in 2000. Over the ensuing years, the GPEI has functioned effectively, reducing polio cases by more than 90% since Y2K. Within that framework, however, a special partnership between the Gates Foundation and Rotary has emerged..."
