Rotary International District Governor, Dave Thomas
WOW! What a Conference
My father was an Ironworker who worked on high steel buildings in Baltimore. My mom was a waitress and then a cosmetologist. When the Sunday paper came my dad grabbed the Sports Section. Don and I fought over the Funny pages – Gasoline Ally, Dagwood, Prince Valiant, Dennis the Menace, Dick Tracy, Ally Oop and many more. Mom would take the Household Section. It had recipes, marriage advice, and “The Society Page”. We were hardly Society; but you could read about the rich and famous there. Mom wasn’t much into it; but some of the neighbors were. When they dropped over to have a coffee chat they would discuss and I would listen. One of our neighbors read and talked about them so vicariously that it was like she was there. Well in our new Virtual meeting era – I’d like to invite you to the 2020 District Conference
The drive up to Bay Harbor wasn’t as green as we would have liked; but Rotary International Presidents Representative, Sam Adams and his wife were glad to get to the hotel in Bay Harbor. The view of the bay was spectacular and everyone was as friendly as their best friends back in Alabama. They were up early on Thursday for breakfast at a pancake house that had the best crepes. Then a brief car tour of Petoskey. It was a sunny day and once they parked the car downtown they lost track of time shopping. Mary had to hustle a little to get back to the Great Lakes Center for the Arts (GLCFA).

The opening ceremony at 5 PM was fantastic. We met with the 2019-20 Club Presidents and their partners. The District Officers and Conference committee treated us like lost family members. While we ate a scrumptious dinner prepared by Stafford’s Hospitality, the screen was filled with hundreds of action pictures from all the clubs in the District. The Clubs applauded as their photos went by and everyone laughed and joined in on many of them. After Dinner it was off to the really plush theater in the same building. Howard Richards led everyone in UNUSUAL songs while everyone wandered in and found a seat. The moderator, Andy Hayes introduced Bay Harbor and Petoskey dignitaries. Then Dave and Carol were introduced. Dave thanked everyone for coming and recognized those who made the conference possible. The club Presidents were then welcomed on stage by Dave. Next was an introduction to a film by Hans Rosling about why he is an Optimist. I was invited on stage to give greetings from RIP Mark Maloney then Bill Gormont gave an inspirational talk called “Encouraging the Heart”. Thursday - Celebration Night ended with Social Hour overlooking Little Traverse Bay with our new friends forever.
Friday started with breakfast from Stafford’s to some VERY lively wake up music. Back to the Theater to see the USMC Honor Guard bring in our flags. When we saw the Alabama flag beside the American and Canadian flag we almost wept. It was such a touching moment brought off by a crack team of veterans. 9:30 and I was back on stage sharing the story of “Rotary Connects the World” and all Rotary has meant to the world. Dave was then on stage bragging about all the wonderful stories he had heard visiting the clubs in the District. He said – “He wished we could have all been with him”; but since we couldn’t he’d asked six clubs to come and share their stories:
· Ludington – described how they had reenergized their club by taking on a renovation of the City Park. It was a big project; but it showed the club what they could do.
· Grand Rapids – Described their “Service Above Self” Awards program and how they use it to inspire the next generation of Rotarians.
· Cheboygan – Told about their new “Lets Dance” fundraiser to rev up their community in the winter and raise money for the local Hospital
· Wawa – What does a town of 3,000 in rural Ontario do to make sure everyone is honored and recognized? They work with their chamber to set fundraiser dates so all service clubs aren’t competing and then everyone supports everyone else’s
· Petoskey – How do you eliminate a fundraiser that isn’t working and replace it with one that has spectacular results?
The District’s PI chair was then introduced to lead us through “Gimmicks of Public Image” followed by a brief Q&A. It had just turned Noon when Governor Dave sent us off to have fun. He introduced Kassia and went over all our options. I found myself golfing with Mike Snyder and Mary was torn between the Wine tour and shopping. We were back in time to shower, and change before walking back over to the GLCFA. Cocktail Reception, Stafford’s dinner, and into the evening program. Again Dave did a video “Pale Blue Dot” reminding us of our many neighbors in a very small neighborhood. John Scholten gave us a breathtaking view of America as we travelled with him on his bicycle from the Pacific to the Atlantic raising money for Polio Plus. Gernot and Dave then recognized the Foundation donors. Finally, we attended a social Hour sponsored by the Cadillac club to recognize DGE Jon Catlin and next year’s team.
Saturday started with a memorial service recognizing Rotarians who were no longer with us. It was a moving service led by Tom Schmidt. Mary and I were back on stage to thank everyone for a wonderful conference and the warm reception we had received. Then the Youth took the stage. Testimonials on Life Leadership (RYLA), Interact, and Strive showed that the next generation of leaders were in good hands. Governor Dave encouraged all of us to continue to support our communities. However, he used the gumball challenge to awaken in all of us the need to also serve needy people everywhere.
We closed with a plated lunch and an inspirational presentation on Human Trafficking from Ruth Rondon. After the conference was over, we drove to Mackinac Island, Mary and I reflected on the wonderful people of District 6290. We talked about all that they were doing. We knew there was no need to be concerned that there was still so much to do. We knew they were up to the challenge. In summary - We had to agree with Dave’s final words – “Here’s to Jane Millar and her wonderful committee for putting together such a wonderful conference”.

Elk Rapids Rotary Club contributes $6,000 to GTRCF’s Urgent Needs Fund
The Elk Rapids Rotary Club may not be meeting weekly as they normally do, but they are still doing good works for the community in this time of need.
On April 9, 2020, the club gave a $6,000 contribution to the Urgent Needs Fund run by the Grand Traverse Region Community Foundation (GTRCF.) According to GTRCF, the “Urgent Needs Fund was created to mobilize local giving and cross-sector community support efforts in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Funds will be granted to local organizations that are providing vital services to individuals and families across our five-county region who are being disproportionately impacted by the instability and economic consequences of the outbreak. Grant funding is currently prioritizing support for nonprofits who are providing immediate relief services.”
Local organizations who have already received Urgent Needs Fund grants include: Good Samaritan Family Services, Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan, Munson Patient Needs Fund, Leelanau Christian Neighbors, Health Department of Benzie and Leelanau Counties (CHIR), Northwest Michigan Food Coalition and the Women’s Resource Center among many others.
If YOU would like to donate to the GTRCF’s Urgent Needs Fund, you may donate on-line at: www.gtrcf.org/give/urgentneeds or mail a check to GTRCF at 233 Lake Avenue, Suite B, Traverse City, MI, 49684. Make check payable “Community Foundation” and write “Urgent Needs Fund” on the memo line.
The Elk Rapids Rotary Club is one of the largest and most active clubs in northern Michigan, but it is the community support of their annual fund-raising events including the Rotary Show, Harbor Days BBQ and Rock-A-Thon that enables the club to provide financial assistance to worthy organizations like the GTRCF.
"The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members."
3D Printing Farm led by Holland Rotarian Delivers PPE
Rotarian Charles Elwood wondered in March if he could build a small 3D Printer farm to bridge a gap in available personal protective equipment. Prior to the emergence of COVID-19, Charles was already involved in teaching 3D printing to local elementary school students.
A week after his initial curiosity, Charles and a team of volunteers organized 191 printers to join forces. The group was named "3Dc19." By the middle of April, over 400 3D printers had joined the fleet. 3Dc19 has now created over 18,000 face shields and "ear savers" for front line workers to date.
The Noon Rotary Club of Holland has lent their support to this project and is involved in organizing volunteers. But continued financial support is needed to bring in more raw materials for the printers.
If you or your local Rotary Club are interested in partnering with 3Dc19 and the Noon Rotary Club of Holland, please visit https://3dc19.com or email Club Secretary Shannon Dykstra at shannon@westmichiganlaw.com.
If your medical organization is in need of PPE gear, or if you are interested in registering your 3D printer to help in the fight against COVID-19, please submit your information at https://3dc19.com and a volunteer will respond as soon as possible.
When the time comes that our clubs are able to meet again in person, I encourage you to table hop. Here is a poem written by late BJ Shawn, a member of the Petoskey Rotary Club.
TABLE HOPPING
Written by BJ Shawn
I would like to be a bit less global today, in giving thanks............... if I might!
When I became a member of the Rotary Club of Petoskey, my mentor, Moon Seagren, a warm and welcoming soul, sat with me for 4 to 6 weeks, and then bounced me out of a very secure cocoon.
She said that a principle of Rotary was to connect with all the members of the group, and I was on my own. I was to remember to rotate, or as I used to call it in high school table hop!
Table hopping was WAY out of my comfort zone, not knowing anyone, really…the dentist sounded good!
Now, I have to say that it has been truly a rewarding experience, and I thank Moon and you for making me feel this way!
I have met and been welcomed by so many of you. I have exchanged ideas, laughed and cried with a mayor, a funeral director, school superintendents, creative, visionary, art- center directors, a beautiful marketing maven, a remarkable leader who replicates a Vogue magazine ad every week, a school board president, past law students of my Dad’s, a volunteer fireman, a dedicated protector of our waters and a tireless advocate for global early education.
During the last 8 years of table hopping, I have been inspired by a dedicated business counselor, educated by an expert in substance abuse, secured a fabulous space for my business through a supportive landlord and enjoyed exchanges with a true advocate of the geriatric set.
I’ve had the opportunity to share empathy with those of you dealing with elderly parents, been assisted in educating my staff with the assistance of a supportive public safety officer, retained an attentive company to hydrate my staff, and had a chance recently to share ideas with a wife of a member in regard to an event for HER charitable organization… and I’ve had a blast doing so.
I have received your support in my business and have been truly impressed watching your families grow up soooo beautifully.
I have joined forces with some of you to fight for causes that we truly believe in, even though we don’t agree on everything!
I have bonded with some of you and your wives and husbands in a deep and fun-filled friendship ………..
And I have been truly inspired by the heroic life and death struggles of some of you, your wives and your children.
I am honored to be part of this Rotary club. I thank you for taking me out of my comfort zone to mingle and be welcomed, educated and inspired .
Table hopping was the LAST thing I ever saw myself doing years ago, but it has turned into one of my favorite things to do.
Not only do I get to be charitable with you,… you have allowed me to get to know you.
I give thanks to all of you and… to Table Hopping!!
