Area of Focus: The Rotary Foundation

The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.

In September 2016 The Rotary Foundation earned a 4-star rating and perfect 100 score from Charity Navigator, the largest and most prestigious independent evaluator of nonprofits in the United States. This is the Foundation’s ninth in a row, and it places the Foundation in the top 1 percent of U.S.-based charities.

Help bring clean water & sanitation to Honduras

Water and sanitation in HondurasRotary Health and Humanitarian Outreach Projects (HHOP) work trip to Honduras in 2017 is scheduled and reservations are being accepted to go on the trip. Per person costs for travelers are estimated at $2,000 and deadline for deposit is October 25th (please see linked “Trip Announcement” for details).

You and/or your Rotary Club can help make the trip affordable to the travelers, by donating towards the water filter and latrine costs. It will also enable your club to donate to a clean water and sanitation project. We take Interact and Rotaract students on this trip and any funds donated will be especially appreciated by them in reducing their trip costs.

Total material costs for the trip in February 2017 are $4500. Grand Haven Rotary Club is donating to this need but help from other clubs would be greatly appreciated.

Your donation should be made out to HHOP (Health and Humanitarian Outreach Projects), a Rotary based 501c3. Mail your check to HHOP, c/o Dr Don Crandall, 3981 Norton Hills Rd, Norton Shores, MI 49441. Please note on your donation that the funds are for the 2017 HHOP work trip.

If you have any questions about this request or participation in the trip, please contact trip coordinator, Gail Ringelberg at 616-402-4190.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide. I hope someone from your club can join us on the trip this year to see firsthand how lives can be changed with clean drinking water and sanitation.

We have a reputation to maintain!

Five years ago, a simple idea started circulating around the world: "As a complement to the 'spend, spend, spend' messages of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, could we set aside a day dedicated to giving our organizations making a difference in communities at home and across the globe?"
Today, this idea--#GivingTuesday--has taken off and is a movement embraced by millions of poeple looking to expand the "season of giving" to include charitable causes.
Last year the Rotary Foundation challenged us to do something significant. Rotarians donated over $170,000 in one 24-hour period and, believe it or not, District 6290 raised the most!
We have a reputation to maintain! Save the date for November 29th and look for additional details at our Facebook page.

Earn $500 for an Interact service project

Interactor Club sponsors, challenge your Interact Club to show themselves in action for the 8th annual Interact Video Awards! The “Best Video” will be awarded US$500 toward their next service project. Have them create a video that shows how Interactors have fun while making a difference and be recognized. Choose from two themes:

  • If Interactors ruled the world: Imagine a world where Interactors are in charge, making big decisions that shape our world and future. How would Interactors transform the world for good?
  • Sustainable Development Goals: The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals target ending poverty, protecting the planet, and ensuring prosperity for all, and Interactors are vital to achieving these goals by 2030. Choose one of the goals and show how your club is taking action to help achieve it.
Check out last year's finalists to get inspired. Work together with Rotaract clubs, Rotary clubs, teachers, and parents to make the video a reality.  Make sure to submit your video before the 2 December deadline. Questions? Email interact@rotary.org

Help Interact students build houses

We will have 50 or more Rotary Interactors participating in a service project trip to El Salvador in March of 2017.

In order to keep the costs at a minimum, we are asking all Rotary Clubs to consider taking part in this trip by donating funds for the purchase of building materials of the multi generational homes that we will build. The cost of a home is $3000. We understand that most of our clubs in the district can't afford that sort of money, but maybe you could sponsor a 1/2 of a home or a 1/3 of a home.

Everyone (students as well as chaperones)  are responsible for the cost of airfare, hotel, meals and transportation while in El Salvador. If we don't receive the funds for building materials from our District Rotary Clubs, then the cost of the trip will increase. Please consider helping our youth as well as our fellow human beings in El Salvador who are presently living in mud huts held together by bamboo or are living in scrap metal shanty's
.
Please contact: Doug Mealey tel: 616-818-9942 or email him at cldlmealey@gmail.com

This trip is a great way to teach our youth about SERVICE ABOVE SELF.

WE ARE ALSO LOOKING FOR A PERSON WHO LIKES PHOTOGRAPHY,   WHO COULD TAKE PICTURES AND THEN PUT THEM TOGETHER  FOR A PRESENTATION THAT COULD BE USED THROUGHOUT THE ROTARY DISTRICT.  IF YOU ARE THAT PERSON, WE COULD USE YOU.  PLEASE CONTACT DOUG MEALEY.

Above image is linked to a 25-minute video of our past District Rotary Interact trip so that you will get an idea of what this trip is all about. If you need the actual video file please contact Doug directly.

Life Leadership Changes Lives

At Lowell Rotary Club, featured from left to right: John Noling, Josalyn, Jillian, Molly, Blake, and Jim White
D6290 Life Leadership Conference (LLC) is the longest continuously running youth leadership program of it's kind in Rotary.
It is never too early to start promoting this amazing, life-changing program recommended for promising student leaders in Grades 10-12.
If you've sponsored students to past LLC programs, be sure to invite them to your club for a program and include them in your recruiting efforts for the 2017 conference. Nothing makes an impact on students like hearing from a fellow student that this was worth their investment of time!
Keep reading for highlights of a recent presentation by LLC participants at Lowell Rotary Club.

Youth Programs In Action

Jason Gargala took Sid, Holland Rotary's exchange student from India, and Jaakko, our exchange student from Finland, to the MSU game today. We had access to the Auto Owners food tent and Tom Izzo, the MSU basketball coach, was there and Sid had hit photo taken with him.
Meet Louis Hosticka, Whitehall H.S. sophomore, looking forward to spending the 2017-18 school year abroad as a Rotary Exchange Student.
Preparation for going on Exchange is a year long process. Louis will be attending district YEP conferences, coming to regular Rotary meetings once a month, and participating in Interact (the high school Rotary club) as he learns about the work of Rotary and the role of being an ambassador for our country, state, and community.

Montague-Whitehall Rotary had the joy of having Rotary Youth Exchange Program (YEP) Inbound, Rebound and future Outbound students with us. As is our custom, today our 3 Inbound YEP students: David Chavez - Columbia, Jao Tharapha Uchotananan - Thailand and Pelin Zorba - Turkey received very special customized sweatshirts. Zoom in to see their country flag joining with ours.

Public Image Best Practice Sharing

We have a Facebook group for this involved in Public Image to share best practices (click on above image).

In short, we believe member attraction and engagement will be improved through better public image and, in particular, through smart use of social media. While many of us have successfully launched a public-facing Facebook page, we haven't been as successful leveraging that to our greatest advantage. This group hopes to change that!

This group is open to club website administrators, newsletter editors and, for that matter, any member that has an interest in promoting our image. Join us - lend your voice - let's make an impact!

Helping members that aren't computer savvy

Question posed by GABRIELE MALLAPATY:

"We would like to know what clubs and districts are doing to encourage members to register on MyRotary.  Our club has now about 70% of members registered on MyRotary.  We used the Rotary prepared step-by-step guide to assist members and even did some hands-on sessions for those members who are less internet saavy."

GRANTS … Rotarians making a difference in the world

Flat River Outreach Ministries serves low income individuals and families in the Lowell area. One of their programs, Neighbor to Neighbor, provides the financial support and volunteer manpower needed to winterize and repair home hazards for neighbors living in the poorest conditions. And one of the greatest sources of funding and volunteer manpower for the program is the Rotary Club of Lowell

After being awarded a $2000 matching District Local Grant to support the program, two dozen Lowell Rotarians, Interactors, and their family members rolled up their sleeves and got to work. Plumbing and floor repairs, ramp construction, home winterization and fall cleanup were just a few of the jobs that were tackled by the volunteers. In the end, eight families were the direct beneficiaries from their efforts. But the two dozen Rotarians, Interactors and their family members who provided the service benefited even more, knowing that their hard work improved the quality of life for so many in their community.

A fine example of Rotarians making a difference.  Congratulations Lowell!  Job well done!

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE ROTARY FOUNDATION CENTENNIAL

The Rotary Foundation turns 100 in 2016-17! Our Foundation stands at the forefront of humanitarian service, having supported thousands of projects to provide clean water, fight disease, promote peace, and provide basic education — as well as the historic project dedicated to eradicating polio worldwide.

We Saw You On Facebook

Chippewa County Sunrise Rotary was joined by the Sault Ste Marie, MI Rotary Club in presenting Denny Dougherty with a paddle and $5,000 financial support for the island project. A lot of hard work went into clearing this area, adding a dock, and making it a great place to kayak to. Big Thank You to all who worked so hard to make this happen.

Chippewa Sunrise Rotarians volunteered at The Soup Kitchen. We had the largest attendance that I can remember. Thanks to Rotarians Ken, Jeff, Julie, Carla, Kathleen and the family members that helped out.

Hart Rotarians helped distribute food on behalf of Feeding America. The food stayed dry, the families stayed dry, and the Rotarians got soaked - but had a great time helping their community.

Grandville-Jenison Rotary had the honor and pleasure to be a part of this community project to bring a downtown fireplace to the corridor, along with the Downtown Development Authority, Mayor Maas & Family, and the Grandville Jenison Chamber.

The Rotary Club of Wawa contributes funds for the purchase of "Pedal Desks" for École Saint-Joseph. The Pedal Desk is a classroom aid that will allow students to work on assignments while burning off the extra energy that may normally detract from their learning. These desks come in different configurations, they can be single stand alone units or can come as grouped units, ideal for learning centres.
