Join Fellow D6290 Rotarians For Our Fall Summit

We invite D6290 Club Presidents and Public Image Chairs to join us for a day of strategizing and developing actionable plans on Saturday, October 15th at the Ralph A. McMullen Center on Higgins Lake in Roscommon, MI.

The District’s job is to help clubs grow, and our strategic plan ensures we focus on what matters most to clubs. We will start by revisiting our Strategic Plan to ensure it's still on track, making adjustments as needed to ensure we continue to be an indispensable resource for our clubs.

For the remainder of the day our focus will shift to Public Image which we believe is a critical driving force to enable member attraction, engagement and successful fundraising. We will feature success stories from several D6290 clubs, and will connect you to resources that will help you get the most from your investment of time and dollars.

Join us the evening prior for dinner and fellowship, or arrive Saturday morning for breakfast and in time for 9am start of program. We will adjourn at 3:30pm. Cost is $100 if arriving on Friday (includes all meals and overnight private accommodation) or $25 for Saturday only (includes breakfast and lunch).

Clubs’ input into this discussion will add considerably to the quality of the discussion outcome.  We hope YOUR club will send representative(s) to the meeting and add to the quality of the discussion. Our target audience includes Club Presidents, President Elects, Public Image Chairs, Social Media and Website administrators.

Take Advantage of our 2016-2017 Public Image Grant

September 30th is the deadline for submitting applications for the 2016/2017 Public Image Matching Grant. Don't miss this great opportunity to increase awareness of Rotary and promote your club. All District 6290 Clubs are eligible.

We have made $16,000 USD available to its clubs via a matching grant program to fund Public Image Projects/campaigns. Clubs may apply for one of these two available grants:
  1. Rebranding/Logo Update Initiative (NEW!) - Up to $250 available in 1:1 match for projects that update club supplies (e.g. banners, brochures) with Rotary’s new brand/logo. Total project may exceed $500 but District funding is capped at $250.
  2. Outreach/Awareness Initiative - $750 District match for $500 club minimum investment to support campaigns focused on membership & awareness e.g. online advertising, social media advertising, print/TV/radio/outdoor advertising.
The guidelines, application, reporting instructions and financial reimbursement forms are available at District website under Public Image > District Grants

Celebrate Rotary at the 2017 Convention

Over 60 people from District 6290 are planning to attend the 2017 Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, and the list keeps growing!

Rotarians are signing up at a record-setting pace and, as a special celebration of Rotary Foundation's Centennial, this promises to be the best and biggest party in a hundred years! If you are the least bit interested, it's best to register now. There are reasonable cancellation policies if your plans should change. Some of the special events are already selling out.

Our District is working to secure a block of rooms. We've run into a few glitches, so to be on the safe side it's wise to make a reservation for hotel accommodations which you can choose to release at future date. For more cost-effective options we suggest you consider airport properties (book directly vs. via convention site). If booking an airport hotel, we recommend one that has airport shuttle service, complimentary breakfast and free cancellation policy. Hotels.com is excellent site for easy booking. Atlanta has a great rail public transit system and you can use that for transportation to/from the convention center. If you are interested in being notified about a District block of rooms once they become available, please contact Wendell Christoff at wchristoff@litehouseinc.com or 616-581-1104.

It's a party!

We have been amazingly lucky to secure The World of Coca Cola for the Zone 28/29 party. This fun venue tells the story of Coca Cola - from it's invention (and the secret formula) . . . to how it is bottled . . . to the many ad promotions over the years . . . to all kinds of fun articles that have carried the Coke logo . . . to tasting the over 120 different Coke products that are sold worldwide (yes, you will be able to taste as many as you wish) . . . and much more!

In addition to your museum admission, there will be wonderful food, wine, beer and Coke products (2 drinks per person), a chance to have your photo taken with the Coca Cola polar bear . . . and more fun surprises!

Registration is now open. Go to www.atlanta2829party.com and sign up NOW. We are expecting the largest attendance of Zone 28 & 29 Rotarians and friends since the 2005 Chicago Convention and SPACE IS LIMITED, so don't waste a minute!

The party will be held on Sunday evening from 7 to 10 p.m. following the Opening Sessions of the Convention.  It will be a great way to meet up with all of your friends from Zones 28 & 29, as well as to make lots of new friends.

13 ideas to develop membership retention and recruitment strategies

The reason why Rotary is such a successful organization is because it is full of members that have one trait in common - the passion to make a difference in the world. All of us share this passion and it's what drives us to work together.

Today, a growing population of youth are not even aware of what the organization is or does while those that do are unable to join for a variety of reasons. Granted, we've made many changes to combat this challenge such as the introduction of eClubs, relaxed attendance requirements, more meeting time options, etc. but we still have ways to go. Members continue to leave and clubs continue to struggle to recruit.

This year, with members in mind, why not create a development and recruitment strategy by implementing methods your club hasn't tried before.

Dynamic ! Captivating! Enthusiastic ! These two HS seniors were awesome!!
It's that time of year - scary and excited all rolled into one giant complicated mess of emotions which we know, from experience, eventually turn into joyful memories and life-changing growth.
Here is Connor Boyer leaving for her Rotary Youth Exchange year in Stuttgart Germany wearing her Rotary Blazer covered in her pins to date! Posted by proud family. We're sure it's comforting to know that everyone's sons & daughters will be arriving at host clubs that will embrace them as their own.

Emilie Szekely, has been home for about six weeks from her year away on Youth Exchange in Formosa, Argentina. She presented to the Wawa Rotary Club meeting the highlights of her year and introduced the members to her Host Families and friends.

Sault Ste. Marie, ON Rotary was honoured to have rebound Rotary Exchange Student Aimée Carter speak about her 11 months in Thailand. She shared about the different regions of Thailand, the people of Thailand, and the many trips she was able to go on. From hiking mountains and riding elephants to visiting temples and night-swimming in bio-luminescent water, Aimee seemed to have had an amazing experience!

Life Leadership Students are AMAZING

157 youth leaders from this summer's very successful District 6290 Life Leadership Conference from are now doing even more great things in our Rotary communities. With the start of school, look for them to lead the way. Invite them to Rotary, listen to their reports, and stay in touch with them this school year to mentor them more into the Rotary family. We have so much in common and so much to offer each other in Rotary!

This was an exceptionally talented and amazing group that bonded well and got involved from the very start. Their evaluations of LLC were outstanding in every way. Director Dave Rozman and his expanded and very talented staff are to be commended for making this year's program so powerful and well executed.

Congratulations and thanks to new Rotarian staff members, Anne Bonney (Traverse Bay Sunrise) and Rhonda Lamberg (Houghton Lake) for making wonderful contributions to the program this year.

Start your planning and early recruiting now for next year's June 14-17 Life Leadership Conference at the Kettunen Center in Tustin, Michigan. Tuition will remain the same at $375 per student, but the deadline date for applications, to avoid the $25 late fee per application, has been moved up two weeks to May 1, so more reason to get organized for action.

Thanks to the many Life Leadership Committee Chairs and other officers at the club level that made this all possible. Look for future columns in our newsletter to keep you updated on the latest and greatest LLC news.

District Foundation Committee Updates

October 15th is the deadline to submit District Local and District International Foundation Grant applications. Clubs must meet eligibility requirements, which includes submitting Rotary & District Memorandum of Understanding.

The District's Rotary Foundation Audit Committee has reviewed the bank statements and accompanying checks and has issued this statement: "In our opinion, the statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial activity of Rotary District 6290 Global Scholarship and District Grant Funds entrusted to it by The Rotary Foundation from July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016." View the full report.

We are thrilled to report that for the eigth consecutive year The Rotary Foundation has received a four-star rating from Charity Navigator, the highest award they bestow in their ranking of nonprofits. This time, and for the first time, the Foundation has earned perfect scores for its Financial Health and its Accountability & Transparency. Those two scores then translate into a perfect 100 point overall score. Less than one percent of the thousands of charities rated by Charity Navigator have earned perfect scores. We couldn't be more excited and proud!

Reflections from earthquake-stricken Italy

Luca Della Volta, chair of his district’s service project committee, is helping with Rotary relief efforts in central Italy, where a 6.2 magnitude earthquake and aftershocks toppled homes, killed more than 240 people, and left many more homeless. Volta describes the damage-torn areas he surveyed, and thanks Rotarians for their support in a blog post for Rotary Voices.

"Diversity is inviting everyone to the party. Inclusion is allowing everyone at the party to dance the way they want to dance," he adds. "That's what I want for Rotary. Let's all continue the dance." - Todd Jenkins

He joined a 200+ member Rotary Club when he was 24 and shortly after he participated in a Rotary Service Exchange in Brazil. That experience lit a fire . . .
Todd became his Rotary club's youth service chair and then district Youth Exchange officer, making him one of the youngest district leaders in Rotary. He's also served as the club's Rotary Youth Leadership Award chair, Rotaract faculty adviser, and Interact sponsor adviser.

Polio – we may be real close . . .  but we’re not done yet!

When was the last time there was polio in Europe? If you guessed 2002, the year the region was certified polio free, you were wrong. The last time polio affected a child in Europe was last summer. In 2015 two Ukrainian children were diagnosed with paralytic polio, and, given the way the disease manifests itself, that means many more were likely infected and didn’t show symptoms. At least one Western news outlet deemed the outbreak, “crazy” – but the reality is that no place on earth is safe from polio until the disease ids eradicated everywhere.

Look what happened in Nigeria only a few weeks ago. Two new cases of paralytic polio a full 13 months after the country had been certified polio free. The comment in the above paragraph saying, “many more were likely infected and didn’t show symptoms” applies here too. For every one case of paralytic polio discovered there are at least 100 more cases of kids with runny noses and flu-like symptoms, carrying, and spreading the polio virus through unsanitary drinking water and improper sanitation systems in overcrowded communities.

We are so close. We’ve got a 99.9 percent reduction in polio, but we are not there yet.

Rotarians and others have to keep working. People will naturally say, “Well, it seems to be basically gone, so let’s move on to other things.” But the fact is it is not gone and if we move on and don’t complete the job, we set ourselves up for having the disease come right back.

GRANTS … Rotarians making a difference in the world

When the City of Wawa needed a secure place to store tools and other garden materials at their Community Garden, the Wawa Rotary Club applied for and was awarded a $1000 District Local Grant to match their $1000 to purchase the materials needed to support the construction of a garden shed. Under the supervision their shop teacher and the Chair of the Wawa Community Garden, six Michipicoten High School seniors constructed the garden shed from scratch, and Wawa Rotarians relocated the shed from the school its new garden site.

Congratulations Wawa Rotarians on not only providing the financial support needed for the garden shed, but also for helping to support the vocational training of young adults in your community!

Muskegon Rotary Club's 13th Annual Grape Escape

This year marks the 13th anniversary of Muskegon Rotary's "Grape Escape," the club's largest fundraiser. This premier wine, craft beer, and food tasting event is scheduled for Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at 6:00 p.m.

As we know, annual fundraisers such as these require an enormous effort. The event attracts between 450 and 500 attendees and requires between 30 and 40 volunteers to pull it off. But the rewards are huge -- on average, $35,000 to $40,000 funds raised which benefit a different community-based organization each year.

This year's non-profit partner is Muskegon Area Promise, an organization that guarantees young people that if they work hard they will be able to earn at least a two-year college degree tuition-free. Scholarships will fund an Associate’s Degree or Certificate program at Muskegon Community College or Baker College of Muskegon.

Rotarians helping Louisiana flood victims

Rotary clubs in the southeastern United States are collecting relief funds to help thousands of victims after record flooding devastated communities in southern Louisiana in August. Torrential rains caused rivers, streams, and bayous to swell, damaging or destroying more than 60,000 homes and killing at least 13 people.

Honoring Rotary Foundation Supporters!

The Cedar Springs Rotary Club honored long time Rotarian Pat Capek at their July 27 meeting with a honorary Paul Harris Award for her many years as program chairman. Since 1990, Pat has arranged at least three times a month for the club’s weekly noon meeting. Programs have included a group that brought a flock of parrots that chatted the entire meal, updates by regional non-profits, introduction of new businesses, mission trip reports, unique vacation experiences, students on schooling, exchange students, and the club's Boy Scout Troop and Venture Crew.

Pat was one of the first three women to join the club. She joined in 1982 with Dorothy Bishop and Linda Hunt. She passed served as club president.

Her dedication in arranging these presenters definitely illustrates the Rotary motto: Service above Self.

DG Gernot presented Big Rapids Rotary Club Past President Ben Montgomery with his Paul Harris Fellow recognition.
Petoskey Rotarian Dave Schneider receiving a Paul Harris Fellow recognition from Steve Brummeler with President Kent Cartwright looking on.
Traverse City Rotary recognized six Paul Harris Fellows. Pictured left to right are Dennis Muth +1, Bob Hood +1, Bob Witkop +6, Byron Hanson +1, Marilyn Fitzgerald +2 and Kurt Revard +1
George Higginson of Holland Rotary receives a Paul Harris award!
Also in the picture, Paul Kleinheksel, Tom Bos, and Russ Miller.
At Lowell Rotary Club, McKenzie Rhoades was surprised with a Paul Harris Fellow award in recognition of her exemplary demonstration of living a life of service above self. She is a 2016 graduate of Rockford High School and was the President of that school's Rotary Interact Club. McKenzie has been involved with service at Flat River Outreach Ministries, Degage Ministries, and travelled to the Dominican Republic to bring clean drinking water to the citizens through the Thirsting to Serve program. She also taught Rockford Public Schools elementary school students about water filters to bring awareness of this important global issue. Her grandmother and Lowell Rotary Club member, Sylvia Taylor, contributed $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation in honor of McKenzie's past efforts and her future plans to continue serving while attending Central Michigan University. She plans on joining the school's Rotaract club. McKenzie certainly has a bright future and we look forward to seeing all the great works of service she will do in the next few years.
